This grade of ZenMatcha is the finest, highest quality of authentic Japanese Matcha tea. This matcha tea is made from the tenderest, youngest, sweetest top two leaves of the tea plant. These premium tea leaves, called “tencha”, are harvested in early spring the “tea season” in Japan. They are carefully de-stemmed, sorted by hand, and steamed lightly before drying. These precious green tea leaves are then carefully ground on ancient granite stone mills, into a super-fine powder.  In Japan this “premium” matcha is traditionally mixed alone with hot water and consumed in an ancient Zen tradition of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, using a bamboo matcha whisk and matcha bowl.  However, it can be used to create any kind of “premium” matcha beverage, including the very best matcha lattes, due to it’s incredible green color and sweet taste.

This “premium” grade of matcha tea actually contains the highest amounts of l-theanine, due to the shading effect on the tea plant before harvesting. Shading the tea plant induces a surge in the production of l-theanine, the unique amino acid that imparts a “blissful”, calm feeling.  L-theanine is also responsible for the “sweet” flavor of this premium matcha tea. Shading the plants prior to harvesting also causes a release of chlorophyll into the leaves which results in the vibrant, green color.

Our premium ZenMatcha tea also has a healthy dose of “tea” caffeine which produces a slow, sustained, comfortable release of energy in the body.  The catechins contained in matcha actually work to slow down the absorption of caffeine, so the impact on the body is much more gentle than drinking coffee.  In addition, the unique form of caffeine found in matcha tea does not adversely affect the adrenal glands or spike blood sugar like coffee caffeine.  No jitters or sweats!  Just a healthy energy boost.

All three grades of ZenMatcha contain comparable amounts of “tea” caffeine, about 70 mg per 1 teaspoon serving of matcha. Thus, they all impart an equivalent, healthy energy boost!
