By definition Matcha (ma - ground, cha - tea) is Japanese, however there are competitors who are mislabeling cheap Chinese, Korean matcha and trying to sell it at a high price. Some companies are even "cutting" their Japanese matcha with cheap Chinese matcha in an attempt to make more money and bamboozle customers.

For clarification, matcha that comes from China is not stone ground. In fact it is "blown up" using high pressure and force. This process burns the delicate leaves and destroys many of the nutrients. In addition, Chinese agricultural standards are well below the Japanese, and they flagrantly use pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers with little or no restrictions. In short, matcha that comes from any country other than Japan is questionable in quality at best. ZenMatcha sources its matcha from the Aichi Prefecture, near Kyoto, the spiritual heart-centre of Japan, which is where matcha, Zen, and the entire tea ceremony originated.
